The White League's Summer of Terror
In August 1874, the White League summer of terror climaxed in the town of Kushada. The majority black area was controlled by a white Republican family, the Twitchelles. Marshall Twitchell was a Union Army veteran from Vermont who led black troops during the Civil War. He fought for black public education and appointed his brother and three brothers-in-law to local positions in Red River Parish.
