The Religious Relationship Between Materialism and the Relinquishing of Material Goods
The notion of materialism as a bad thing in terms of positive accumulation of wealth and status through what one owns has a kind of religious, there's a religious route to I think the criticism of that kind of materialism. These kinds of ideas of an ascetic Buddhist giving up of material things that somehow there's a truer spiritual path in the relinquishing of material possessions. And so if you look at the history of consumers and all the history of consumer society, it's a slightly different construction of consumer society.
