According to the prevailing cultural beliefs of the time in order to ward off the anger of ancestral spirits the couple's second child was supposed to be a girl. So they adopted a girl named Phoebe. Some say they did it to avoid bad luck some say because they believe she was a Ho Huan's daughter with another woman. By 1939 Li Hui Chuan's opera group was invited for a tour of United States that would last for a year. Grace would travel with him while her mother-in-law would watch over their three kids.
