Timothy Snyder: Socrates is trying something that's never been tried before in the history of philosophy. He says we know about these things from our experience, but Plato wants us to see them as universal. We already know how to use the word, but we don't know what it means, he writes. So beauty is something that only comes to you in fact - not a thing which can be defined by its own definition. The most extraordinary philosopher ever was executed because he refused to run away and help other people rather than rule the state.
