The Heristic Search Hypothesis
The nature of the scientific discovery process is just different. A physical symbol system exercises its intelligence in problem solving by search, that is, by generating and progressively modifying symbol structures until it produces a solution structure. Physical symbol systems must use huristic search to solve problems because such systems have limited processing resources. Computing resources are scarce relative to the complexity of the situations with which they are confronted. Ah, so we are in a lucky situation where we can actually operate so quickly compared to other sciences. Tis little like scaled down probes, you know. And a man computer su just re up a hundred machines if you need em these days.
