I'm curious if there were moments of solidarity between the asia black communities in, you know, the period of the civil right struggle of the sixtiesd et cetera. So we now have ethnic studies to day. It came out of struggles in the late 19 sixties when newly defined asian americans a were in solidarity with the black student union and the third world liberation front. There is actually also a a hundred and 50 plus here history of that solidarity as well,. going back to 18 69 with frederick douglas's speech a supporting chinese emigration to the united states. Here it goes back to african American soldiers who were colonizing the philippians
Asian Americans are an essential part of the history of this country, but the true story is all too little told, especially in a time of rising anti-Asian sentiment and violence. Historian and author of “Asian American Histories of the United States” Catherine Choy joins Adam to discuss the origin of racist ideas such as the “model minority myth,” and dive into the history.
