The Failure of the Pigford Settlement
CNN's John Sutter says the failure of a provision he authored is not because of conservatism or a recalcitrant court system. Discrimination against black farmers was a prevalent feature in US history, and that's why a class action suit on behalf of farmers was brought in the late 1990s. The Pigford settlement granted over a billion dollars to black farmers; 69% of eligible black farmers got money from the government an average of $67,000 each. "I mean, here we are in America. You're going to let lawyers put a clause in there. We have no recourse"
