In 1840, John Quincy Adams became an anti-slavery activist because he was defending the right to free speech. The Amistad captives were brought from Africa to Cuba and then slave laundered before they went on to somewhere else. He didn't want to play politics much like Jimmy Carter in some ways. And that's why he had a failed one term presidency; he was out of touch.
