The Effects of Hyperventilation on the Body
In normal conditions, you can measure very accurately how much oxygen is in your system by measuring the buildup of CO2. Travis' intention when he was breathing deeply was to pack his lungs with air and force the oxygen into his cells. When you hyperventilate however, the body doesn't know that it's running out of air. And so it doesn't conserve oxygen like it should. You're literally wasting your breath.
