By 1979, which is the year that Prigishin turns 18, the regime has fatally invaded Afghanistan. He had hoped to pursue a kind of career and professional skiing as an elite sportsman. But he was encouraged by a stepfather in this but ended up teaching fitness at a children's sports school. The same year he starts to steal. He's prosecuted. He's given a two-year suspended sentence for stealing. And he just became more unstable. He started robbing, burgling, swindling. His criminal connections may have helped him get close to Putin during those early days.
