The Fall of the Stahlhelm in Germany

The Stahlhelm was the last remaining large paramilitary group within Germany that was not completely loyal to the Nazi leadership. The unions had been a critical base of support for the Social Democrats in the previous years, and so there was a concerted effort to find a way to remove them from the equation. With the trade unions out of the picture, their political supporters, the social democrats, were also targeted. Over 3,000 social democrat members would be arrested all over Germany on June 22nd alone.
