The Interpretation of Dreams and the Chinese Language
Freud described dreams as the royal road to the unconscious. In an open note book in the exhibition, he wrote that chinese had no grammar and that word can mean many things at once. He's got hold of this idea that chinese is vague and indistinct - but you can only understand it in context. And so he says, well, you know, so chinese, which is a language, he says, it's actually spoken by millions of millions of people to day. It has the same thing. I mean, he doesn't say that it's got no meaning, but he says you can Only understand it incontext.
