Don't get angry or defensive when it's obvious they're trying to manipulate you. Barker suggests saying something like, I can tell that I'm doing or failing to do a lot of things and this has upset you for a long time. This helps you to avoid falling back into the same pattern of reactive behavior and you apologizing. If you don't see the other person as a threat, just as a good human being having a bad day, you can stay compassionate despite them losing their cool.
