The doctrine of eternal security, also known as perseverance of the saints or assurance, is popular among Protestants. John Calvin wrote in a 1539 letter to Cardinal Satellito: "Our agreement with antiquity is far closer than yours" The Synod of Dort said that true believers who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit will still sin but God preserves them from losing their salvation.
