I think my encouragement for students is to think about their PhD as their own. They're not just a product of what their advisors spat out, that they should be thinking of how they've been improving themselves. I would encourage students to take advantage of collaborations and really learn a lot from collaborators. That's a better way for a student to broaden their experience while keeping the advisor involved.
