How to Build Rapport With Trauma Clients

These clients often do feel very fragmented. Developmentally we can explain that there's a lot of trauma before the age of eight, the way your brains developed at that time will prevent them from creating like an explicit coherent narrative or memory. They are more prone to dissociation because usually that's how they had to cope is to go into free submit. So for these clients that have more of a disorganized attachment style, you can feel them wanting to connect with you but also being very fearful or suspicious and trust takes much longer to build with them. And I think that the message for us as therapists is that they need us to just be patient with them they need to move slower in therapy.
