Why Do Snakes Have Venom?

The main use of venom in venomous species is to immobilize their prey. They don't have to struggle against something when they try to eat it. The advantage of venom is they can strike and let go, and the animal will die shortly after. Garter snakes tend to just really bite on to something while it's still alive and swallow it while it's alive. And yet, does not work well for other species. But garter snakes eat things like snails and slugs and tadpoles and frogs and lizards - which could be dangerous.
