Working Collectively at the Whiteboards

There's a difference between what we call collective knowing and doing and individual knowing and doing. So working collectively at the whiteboards and working individually are actually not just variations on the theme. They're actually very different modalities. The consolidation through that gallery walk I mentioned earlier helps to turn the unstructured informal work that the students have been doing at the boards into more structured and formal ways of thinking.
