Hip-hop artists have often tended to over-index and be early on the new platform. So if you're very curious to see, okay, what's going to be the next thing? Where's it going to be? It's most likely going to be hip-hop artists on that track. Tyler the Creator is an example of doing things that don't scale. He found his audience of like-minded people that were also considered to be outcast. And I think now he's in this place where this many years into his career, he's now reaching heights where he's won best rap album twice.

Dan Runcie is a music industry analyst, writer, and the founder of the newsletter and media platform “Trapital.” Trapital focuses on the business strategies of hip-hop and offers insights into the intersection of culture and commerce in the industry.
