Did Charles Elliot Destroy Harvard?

Charles William Elliot was the president of Harvard from like 1870 until after the after the turn of the century sometime. He did his best to preserve their influence but ultimately that wasn't they did lose their influence once around you know once he was gone and I don't blame it on him, part of it was just that this was a very small group who couldn't have possibly been doing everything forever.
