The Decline of the Sabbath in Our Culture

In some orthodox forms of Judaism the same thing has happened to the Sabbath rules so that you cannot turn on a light or you cannot press an elevator button. How do you understand the idea that the land itself was meant to have a Sabbath rest? Well I think in a recognition that the earth is God's creation it was recognized pretty early as all good agriculture knows that you can work the land to death and so they must have reasoned that there is an analog between the depletion of human persons and the depletion of the land.
