The Runaway Slave Ad - What You Can Learn From It

On April 13, 1747, Samuel Wellstead posted a runaway slave advertisement in a local newspaper. If any person will give information where he may be found, they shall receive five pounds old tenor reward. I want to point some things out and how to read these types of advertisements. One thing I think that's interesting is the Reverend the Good Reverend Wellstead talks about a Negro fellow named Moses. Has that only sound peculiar about this? What does his name tell you about the circumstances around him? And also something that might be a little ironic in the Reverend's choice of his name?"
