The Relationship Between Inner Speech and Language

Inner speech isn't just one droning voice in your head, it has all these different functions. Inner speech often does seem to us to be a kind of conversation with ourselves where we're representing different perspectives. We do find this sort of cross talk between the left hemisphere language system and something that's actually further over on the right hemisphere tied in with what we know to be an important network for social cognition. So it's like you need a whole other system to come in and connect up and plug before you can get inner speech going.
