The injunction to thyself is at least as old as the oracle of delphi, and it essentially became the corner stone of classical philosophy. One can understand augustine's preoccupation with self knowledge in one of his first dialogues,. The soliloquies depicts augustine and his own reason as sort of separate characters in a conversation.
