The Spartan Strategy for the Peloponnesian War

Sparta's war aim was to destroy the Athenian empire which required a total victory. This meant that they had to destroy Athens's key imperial resources including their walls and fleet. Therefore Spartan strategy had to be primarily offensive in order to achieve their war aims. The cornerstone of which was a land invasion of Attica which Sparta believed would lead to their inevitable defeat.
