Darwin was confused as to why certain animals would evolve ridiculous displays of colour and plumage. He identified the peacock's elaborate tail, which from a selection point of view is 'quite cumbersome' In humans, we also signal our status by the possessions that we can claim ownership over. Our possessions in many ways are a proxy of our genetic fitness.
