The History of Cottonwood, California

Cottonwood was established as a settlement in 1849, which is when the gold rush was. A Bavarian immigrant named Jacob Foster purchased 240 acres on the north side of the Cottonwood Creek. In 1872, it became a big shipping point for cattle and lumber and agricultural products that would come from the Sacramento River Valley. It's between Redding and Red Bluff inland there. The first post office was opened in 1852.
