What Is the Relationship Between Language and Art?
To understand art as a language means to understand it as a medium that embodies a meaning. But in all cases, the fact that the medium embodies a meaning is derivative from the mind. Once painting casts out any represented object, it starts to become itself an object. Painting becomes sculpture. And this can be illustrated in more than one way, but most clearly perhaps with the development of Frank Steller's work. So you have strike arts, formalistic and shapes and colors,. But you also see already it's moving away from the wall. It's an object that's stuck to the wall it looks like.
