People still trust experts, and when there are good studies done, people do express very high levels of trust for scientific experts and other experts. The main dynamic really comes down to human nature and our brains ability to process information is limited. And so most of the cognitive euristics and functions that we have evolved to use to navigate the world around us are still built on a model where, if i see a fellow cave man come running from something bad, so we run. If he's part of my social group or my club, more than somebody who is waving his credentials it's not actually a predator. It's just the wind blowing the wind in your face.
