Paul Westerberg, one of the most prolific songwriters in rock history, had already penned about 30 tunes for the replacements. A few of these songs had already been recorded on a demo that had been laid down on a borrowed reel to reel. When the demo was submitted to a local talent contest, the replacements got lost amidst almost 800 other entries. The band pushed ahead with another demo but this time, everyone was tracked live.
