The Relationship Between Harry Beecher and Frederick Douglass

Stowe was accused at the time of being very patronizing and paternalistic. Harry Beecher wrote about it, she sort of sends her up and makes her rather lighter than we now discover from her speeches that she was. Martin Delaney and Frederick Douglass had a public exchange of letters on the novel when Douglass serialized it in his Frederick Douglass. At one stage they were both thinking of organizing an industrial college for colored youth.
