Unsupervised learning has been around for a while, but it just hasn't been as popular because supervised learning was such a success. I think we were on a different path from what most people were on to because of the problems we are facing, or the fact that we chose to recognize the problem as one of none,. You need more data, right? That the majority of the field just said, well, you just need more training data. They're still saying that to some extent to day.
