Aristotle's Cave Man of Crude Evolutionism

Aristotle suggests that originally what people were doing was spontaneously singing hymns and singing in reverence for the god dionysus. And that eventually, over time, this was developed and refined. The point here is not whether, historically, that is how tragedy came into being. The point is that aristotle is observing in tragedy a highly refined and stylized form of what the cave man does in the caves and what children do in schools.
