The Fourth Challenge Is Scalability of Electric Vehicles
The electric grid we have now can just barely meet existing demand for electricity. It was never designed to recharge electric vehicles. Less than 5% of vehicles on the road today are electric and many hybrids which recharge themselves by burning fossil fuels. The current state of the art in electric vehicles depends heavily on lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries. Lithium is an environmentally challenging metal to mine and global supply of lithium is limited.
