How Do You Explain an Epidemic of Pain?
Pain was seen as almost irrelevant to the task of being a doctor, pain was a symptom, not an actual problem. Doctors were taught to be suspicious of people who complained about high amounts of pain. Medical traines we learned terrible attitudes about patients. Patients were referred to as pain turkeys. But James campbell felt this attitude towards pain was wrong in his practice. He thought it was a problem that doctors didn't pay more attention to pain. Why wouldn't they take it more seriously? There is a history of regarding pain as predictable and expected as part of life.
