Transformation of Violence after the Civil War
This chapter explores how the unprecedented violence of the Civil War shaped the willingness of US leaders to use violence in dealing with labor unrest, Native Americans, and the framing of immigrant workers. It also examines the economic forms of violence that emerged, particularly for those at the bottom of the economic scale, and questions the commonly held belief that inequality was the cause of labor violence.
