With every one degree drop in body temperature below 95, your cerebral metabolic rate falls off by 3 to 5 percent. Cold slows down bacterial growth in chemical reactions and shuts down metabolism. At normal temperatures, this would produce brain damage. But the chilled brain needs far less oxygen-rich blood and can survive intact.
