Around the year 86, certorius probably had a few interactions with julius caesar. He would hear the great men speaking, seeing what he could learn from them. This is around the time that he must have seen torius speaking, and recalled it later on and wrote about it. Even at that age, caesar had kind of picked his he was a man of the people, a populares guy. Sertorius was elected pretor for one of these years, a junior generalship, second in rank only to a consul. So this was promising. But sinna couldn't afford to promote him too much or too quickly at the expense of the great blue blood families
