Pamela Steiner: Understanding these types of reasonings is so freeing to me because that means that we aren't stuck where we are. We can develop the next level of reasoning at any time, she says. She explains how teachers use a technique called dot math to help students who get stuck in counting strategies. "We had to free her up from saying, don't get stuck in that counting strategy," writes Steiner.
