Pandas is a very thin wrapper around matplotlib. It can be kind of this universal interface to visualization. In my experience, I don't use the pandas visualization a whole lot,. But I do think it's important for people to understand it's out there because there are times where that's the quickest way to get something out there. And it's sufficient for the quick and dirty needs.
