Mechanically Ventilating Lungs With Heterogeneous Disease
Disease lungs may have more and less diseased areas which have significantly varied time constants. This can make mechanically ventilating lungs with heterogeneous disease challenging because some areas are lung empty faster than other areas. Auto-peep is present when some of the inspired tidal volume is not exhaled because the expiratory time is too short. In time constant language, at least three towels or three time Constant should be allowed for full exhalation.
