A lot of it is just that our dumb lizard brain has evolved in such a way that we seek safety or certainty, right? When we're in a situation that's uncertain, we tend to find certainty in ways that can be very rational, but often can be extremely irrational. So people like Daniel Kahneman, Kahneman and Tversky talked about this in the 60s and 70s.
