The Myth of Eleanor of Aquitaine
Eleanor of Aquitaine is said to have kept her mistress in a maze. The story first turns up in a source written in the fourteenth century, around 200 years after the fact. No contemporary sources even mention the king building an elaborate labyrinth - which you think might make the news. It is well documented that rosamond clifford died in 11 76 and eleanor was living under house arrest at the time.
