Suffering is both a cause and effect of the catastrophic cognitions and distressing emotions associated with anything that we predict in negative outcome. In most people, if you walk around with the expectations rather than preferences and those expectations never get met, you're probably going to be a rather irritable person. For people with chronic pain, there's a direct correlation between negative thinking and the level of pain that they experience.
