Is There a Labour Market That Is Too Insecure?
A million British workers are on a zero-hour contract where they don't know how many hours they'll be working next week. This insecure labour market means that it's very difficult for people to have a proper living. It keeps productivity low because what firms do is employ an extra hour of labour now instead of investing in people, equipment and so on. You look at our productivity rates much lower than almost all of our European competitors and business investors. And business investment much lower. So we've got deep problems. And if you have deep problems, you can't use the economics that have got us to that state.
