Everett Rummidge: This is the terminus of this week's journey down the eastern coast of China by Marco Polo. It had been a trek of at least 1500 miles, probably more. The city was at its height a prosperity when Marco arrived, and its great naval base would be where Kublai Khan launched his invasions of Japan. Next time, Marco and his family begin to plot their return to Europe, and it will lead to what may be the most dramatic and expansive journey in the life of our Venetian travelers.
