The Future of Battery Storage
In the US, we're a summer peaking system and our peak demand periods last about two to four hours. And since they only need a battery that can provide energy for 15 minutes or 30 minutes, that was a great entry point. We saw several hundred megawatts of new batteries deployed in the US over the last 10 years but haven't moved into longer duration applications yet. Even with cheap natural gas, storage can be competitive. It's a capacity asset with the additional benefit of providing grid flexibility. But it really is about what's that upfront cost comparison? That's the starting point to compare these peaking batteries with peaking combustion turbines.
