The Importance of Religious Freedom in the American Revolution

Americans united for separation of church and state points out that the founding fathers didn't create a secular government because they didn't like religion. Many colonists wanted to end the compelled support for religion, says Julian Zelizer. In 1786, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison passed the Virginia Statute for Religious Liberties. The Declaration of Independence deliberately used generic religious language so that all religions could be included.
