Introduction

The Great Leap Forward was a two-year period of Chinese history. More than 54,000 people died in Lingxia from starvation during this time. A report compiled in March 1961 details what had happened to those who survived the famine. It describes 50 cases of cannibalism and necrophagy that were detailed in the report. The historian Frank Dicotta says it reduces horror to a mere set of facts and figures.
