Catherine's Love Affair With a Horse
Having lovers and mistresses was completely expected behaviour for a king, but it has become a black spot on Catherine's legacy. People spread rumours that she died while having sex with a horse - there is zero evidence of anything like that happening. She also enacted a number of forward thinking reforms in an attempt to introduce enlightenment thought to Russia. And throughout her reign, her patronage of the arts also transformed St Petersburg into a modern cultural haven. Like Elizabeth I of England, her reign has been dubbed the Golden Age of Russia. But her rule wasn't to last forever,. On the 5th of November 1796, her day started like any other. The Empress fell from power at the age of 45
